Press Information Recent Local Press Press Releases The Charlotte Tailgate Farmers Market to Open for Third Season at New Location in South End
The Tailgate relocates to prime location in South End to offer locally grown farm goods and hand-crafted artisanal products.
February 26, 2008 - Charlotte, NC The Charlotte Tailgate Farmers Market, commonly known as “The Tailgate,” is excited to announce that we will open for our third season at our new location in historic South End beginning April 26th in conjunction with the annual South End Art & Soul festival. Regular season operating hours are projected to be Tuesday evenings from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm and Saturdays 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.
The Tailgate’s new location is at 100 West Park Avenue, where West Park Avenue intersects Camden Road.
On-street parking is available in abundance on Park Avenue and on Camden Road. Both the Bland St. and East/West Boulevard CATS Light Rail stops are within easy walking distance of The Tailgate.
Many local businesses will be open during market hours to help create a fun and vibrant market atmosphere. Music, activities for children, and chef demonstrations will be scheduled throughout the season to compliment the offerings at The Tailgate.
Participating Farms and Other Vendors
We welcome back many of the vendors from last season, including: Groundswell Farm (formerly Miles Half Acre, one of the first market vendors), Laughing Owl Farm, Grateful Growers Farm, N Thyme Farm, the Urban Ministry Garden, Rosemary Pete, By Lucille, Quench! Essentials (formerly Soaps and Themes) and SkyeTurtle Designs.
Several new farms and artisans have signed on to join us on one or both market days, including: Small City Farm, Fisher Farm, Underwood Family Farm, The Red Dirt Ranch, and a handful of urban growers.
Other Local Food Markets in the Area
Some of the vendors also participate in other local food markets in the communities surrounding Charlotte. The new Mount Holly Farmers Market and the well-established Matthews Farmers Market operate on Saturday mornings, and are part of a growing number of markets who host exclusively sustainably-grown, direct-to-consumer farm goods, and exclude resellers.

More News About The Tailgate
In the off-season The Tailgate got academic. Market Manager Lynn Caldwell was engaged as a client for a graduate architecture studio project led by Professor Peter Wong at UNCC. Sixteen potential designs for a future more permanent market location were developed in the course of the project, and could very well help guide the future of The Tailgate. The January 2008 issue of Realtor Reflections magazine featured a story about the project.
